The Colonnade Student Newspaper

Front Page Layout & Weekly Graphics

A large part of my role as Art Director for The Colonnade is laying out the front page and making weekly graphics. We strictly use Adobe InDesign, and graphic elements are made in Adobe Illustrator. Stories and photography visuals are written and shot by writers and photographers and I’m responsible for taking the pieces and laying them out visually.

Graphics accompany stories and should provide supporting information in the article, while still being visually appealing. I’ve created graphics across all three desks: News, Arts & Life and Sports. Copy for graphics was given to me by editors and writers, and I create them to best reflect the story and desired layout.

Front page layouts should be engaging, exciting and convey the most important information first. While I’m responsible for laying out the front page, it requires coordination with our other desk editors to ensure the stories run smoothly and visuals aren’t being used twice. This semester our Editor-in-Chief and I wanted to add visual variation in the front page with different fonts pairings and alignments.

Here are some of my favorites.
